Notes
PENFOLDS BIN 95 GRANGE 1998:Export Label.Bright, almost impenetrable dark red. The nose is youthful and intense with dark, ripened Satsuma plum fruits rising above a base of liqueured dark chocolate and licorice. Overtones of malt, toasty barrel ferment and nutty oak meld effortlessly into an exquisitely aromatic offering. The palate displays intense layering of fruit - raspberry, blackcurrant and blackberry - laced with licorice and oak. The power of the fruit at the fore is balanced with ripe velvety tannins, offering an alluring even-textured palate with remarkable length. Shiraz (97%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (3%)Alc/Vol: 14.50%Enjoy: 2010-2045Winemaker: Peter GagoA wine that flirts with perfection, and should rival the 1986 as one of the legendary Granges produced, the 1998 has one of the highest alcohol contents (nearly 15%) as well as one of the highest percentages of Shiraz in the blend (97%). Its stunning purple color is accompanied by exceptionally sweet aromas of blackberry liqueur intermixed with barbecue spices, an endearing, smoky earthiness, pepper, roasted meats, and coffee. Huge, massive, unctuously textured, and extraordinarily youthful, this impressive wine is a candidate for perfection. It should continue to evolve over the next three decades. Wine Advocate #183 Jun 2009 Robert Parker 98+ Drink: 2009 - 2039Very deep garnet in color, the 1998 Penfolds Grange has shut itself away into a closed stage at this time, offering a subdued core of blackberry preserves and blackcurrant cordial with nuances of smoked bacon, black olives, sandalwood and sweaty leather. The full bodied, taut, muscular palate is firmly structured with chewy tannins and enlivening acidity, finishing long and savory. Consider drinking it 2016 to 2030+. May 2012 Lisa Perrotti-Brown 96+
